Les Voiles de St Barth: The Ultimate Luxury Sailing Experience

There are few sailing events in the world that can match the luxury and sophistication of Les Voiles de St Barth. Held annually in mid-April in the stunning island of St Barth, the event attracts some of the world’s best sailors, as well as a host of celebrities and VIPs.

The glistening turquoise water, the luxurious ambiance, and the undeniable French influence give this Caribbean regatta a unique spirit. Competing and socializing are at the heart of its motto, both on the water and onshore. More competitors each year are wanting to participate, including some of the world’s top sailing celebrities.

The origins of Les Voiles de St Barth

Les Voiles de St Barth is a unique sailing event in the way that it was created especially for the beautiful island of St Barth, in homage to its racing history. The first edition of the races was launched in 2010 by French sailors François Tolède and Luc Poupon. The event aims to further St Barth’s phenomenal racing tradition with regattas such as the ones organized by Loulou Magras in the 1970s which attracted hundreds of boats each year, as well as the currently ongoing St Barts Bucket.

In 2019, luxury watchmaking brand Richard Mille became a title sponsor of the event, leading to it being known as Les Voiles de St. Barth Richard Mille.

Attracting the World’s Best Sailors

As one of the world’s most prestigious sailing events, Les Voiles de St Barth attracts some of the best sailors from around the globe. Its spectacular setting in the magnificent turquoise waters of the Caribbean makes it immensely attractive to yacht racing aficionados across the world.

Over 80 boats participate in this event, with a particular emphasis on boats that have completed the renowned Route du Rhum race. More than 1,000 sailors and crews converge on the port of Gustavia to witness a truly spectacular display of competitive yacht racing. Maxis, Spinnakers, Multihulls, and Melges 24s are just some of the boats you’ll see racing at Les Voiles de St Barth.

There are 26 overall courses for the races, created to ensure diversity in distance and to show off St Bart’s natural beauty as the perfect backdrop for competitive racing.

Watching the Races from Shore or Luxury Yacht

One of the best things about Les Voiles de St Barth is that spectators can watch the races from both the shore and from luxury yachts moored in the bay. Typically, there are two races planned for each day from Monday to Saturday, with a day’s break on Wednesday during the weeklong event.

If you choose to watch from the shore, you’ll have a front-row seat to all the action. Alternatively, you can enjoy the races from the comfort of a luxury yacht. Many of the yachts offer VIP packages that include access to private parties and other events.

No matter where you watch from, you’re sure to have an unforgettable experience at Les Voiles de St Barth.

Experience St Barth’s Nightlife

One of the best things about Les Voiles de St Barth is that it gives you the opportunity to experience the island’s fabulous nightlife. Many of the bars and clubs stay open late into the night, so you can party until the sun comes up!

The event’s commitment to sustainability

After Saint Barth was battered by Hurricane Irma in 2017, the organizers vowed to take steps to make the major event clean and eco-friendly as best as possible.

Working with the 11th Hour Racing organization, the team is moving to achieve a zero plastic goal by eliminating single-use plastic items and using biodegradable materials.

The team is also focused on making sure that the food available at the race village is seasonal, local, and fair-trade.

Racers are also educated on eco-friendly actions they can take to help preserve the natural treasures of the island during their time at St Barth Richard Mille.

There are numerous reasons why you should make sure to attend Les Voiles de St Barth next year. The sailing is spectacular and its beautiful setting makes it a sight to behold. You’ll get to experience the island’s fabulous nightlife at a time when it is truly bustling with activity. Also, it’s a great opportunity to rub shoulders with the rich and famous!
