There are two separate ferry boat options available to choose from when traveling from St Maarten to St Barths. The first is from Philipsburg on the Dutch side of St Martin (aka St Maarten) to Gustavia harbor. This is also the side closer to the Princess Juliana Airport. The operator running the public ferry on this route between St Martin and St Barts is called Great Bay Express. In either case, a round trip may cost you less than an open return booking.

Great Bay Express offers a direct public ferry route between Sint Maarten and St Barts. The journey to St Barth takes 45 minutes and in peak season you will that the service runs three times per day. The company runs two boats between St Barts and St Martin/St Maarten route called Pride of St Barth and Big B that have a capacity of 99 and 150 passengers respectively, and have bathrooms and AC.

Advance reservation costs tend to be lower than same-day purchases, so it is certainly worth it to reserve your tickets beforehand. For example, Great Bay Express offers one-way tickets to St Barts for $70 per adult, whereas advance one-way tickets cost $60 instead. Similarly, round trips cost $115 when purchased on the day of the ferry, but $110 when booked advanced.

Passengers also have the option to purchase same-day return tickets which are cheaper than the round trip to St Barts. Discounts are available for children, infants, and residents.

Voyager high-speed ferry from St Martins/St Maarten to St Barts

Voyager runs their ferry services from the French side of St Martin, offering departures from Marigot (15 minutes from the airport) and Oyster Pond to St Barts from St Martin. The journey takes 60 minutes aboard Voyager’s high-speed hydrofoil catamaran and the service runs three times a day in peak season to St Barth and back.

There is free wi-fi available onboard this St Barts ferry, as well as complimentary drinks by a friendly crew, and passengers have the choice to book a private panoramic cabin as well.

Voyager offers three different classes to choose from: ECO Flex, SMART Wifi, and business class. A one-way trip from either Marigot or Oyster Pond to St Barths for a Voyager ferry costs 63€, 72€, or 112€ based on your ticket class. Same-day return trips (round trip) to St Barts and back cost about the same as well.

Edge ferry to St Barths

Another lesser-known option for a ferry from St Martin to St Barth is the Edge high-speed ferry. Unlike Great Bay Express or Voyager, the Edge ferry only has one roundtrip departure every week. The Edge ferry leaves every Monday from Simpson Bay, St Maarten at 9 am and departs from Gustavia harbor back for St Maarten at 4 pm.

Things to keep in mind before you take the ferry from St Martin to St Barts

  • St Barts travelers must always check the departure port to ensure you are at the correct place at the time of your ferry trip from St Maarten.
  • Boarding closes 20 before departure in case of Great Bay Express bookings or a Voyager ferry departure to St Barths so make sure to arrive with plenty of time to check in.
  • Please note that departure tax/port fees are charged at check-in. The charge is $15 for both one-way or a round trip to St Barths.
  • After your arrival at the ferry dock in Gustavia, St Barth, you will be required to present your passport and other relevant documents to clear immigration.
  • The ferries are large and designed to keep seasickness at bay, however, you may experience some motion sickness if you are prone to it. Simply ask the crew for help in this scenario.
